Give out living things cards and yarn.
Students work in groups of up to 4 to build a food web, by stretching a yarn length between living things that eat/are eaten by each other.
Compare the food webs that each group made.
Students could add their own living things to their food web.
As a class, discuss how complicated a food web is, and how living things depend on each other. If one living thing is removed, other living things are affected: can’t lose any part of the web.
This activity can be incorporated to a study of an ecosystem, after students have discovered many living things in it e.g. pond dipping, soil study.
