Summary Use one or more mirrors to experiment with reflections. Science content Physics: Light and Sound (1) Science competencies (+ questioning + manipulation + others that are in every activity) Questioning/predicting: predicting (1 up), hypothesizing (7) Planning/conducting: planning investigations (3 up) Processing/analyzing: comparing observations with predictions (1 up) Evaluating: inferring (3 up) Lessons activity is in Mirrors Materials small mirrors pieces of paper and pencil piece of card supports/clay to fix mirrors in one place dry erase marker Procedure Draw/write something on the piece of paper. Place the drawing behind the card so that it is not visible. Hold a mirror so that you can see around the card at your drawing. Stick the drawing on the underside of a table. Find the place to hold the mirror so that you can see under the desk at your drawing. Play around with other ways of using the mirror to see around corners/behind you etc. Sit next to a partner and put your chins on the table. Put a mirror between and in front of you so that, by looking in the mirror, you can see each other's face in the mirror. Now arrange three mirrors so that you can still see each other (challenging!). The reflections bounce back and forth between the mirrors. See p.19 in the resource book. With a dry erase pen, draw eyes near the top of one mirror, nose in the centre of another mirror and a mouth near the bottom of the third mirror. Arrange the mirrors so that you construct a complete face from the reflections. (Challenging) See p.20 of the resource book. Notes Make a periscope Grades taught Gr 1 Gr 2 Gr 3
